    There, see? Yessterday we accused him of opening her mail. He didn’t – exactly. And it was sweet of him. She needs an agent. Most publishers don’t even bother to open self-submitted work.

    Actually, rejections include the manuscript being returned so these should be large envelopes!

    Really? I wouldn’t think that they’d return the manuscript. They’d go out of business paying for all the postage. Can someone with experience confirm or deny this?

    It depends on the publisher. There was a time when they all returned manuscripts, but now you should contact the publisher or check their submission guidelines online before submitting. Some will warn you that they do not return unsolicited manuscripts unless accompanied by a SASE. Some will tell you that they do not read or return unsolicited material. It’s a tough business.

    Nearly all submissions are done electronically these days. When hard copy ms were submitted you had the option to also send self addressed, postage paid packaging for the return or just a self addressed envelope for your rejection/acceptance to come in. Very few agents will rep children’s picture books because the payout is so small. 15% of just a little bit is a really little bit.

    @David Reynolds

    How do they know what they are missing if they don’t read the manuscripts. I believe Olivia included pre-paid, addressed envelopes for this purpose.

    It’s a bit like applying for a visa to enter China….you include a prepaid envelope to the embassy and they still charge you more to send it back.

    I’ll bet everyone dreams of being an author. And now everyone can string together a couple of sentences.
