Dr. Toon, people almost always take out their frustration on the person who has given them the bad news. After 40 years of working with the public in both retail and public service, I can assure you this is all too normal. Frankly, I thought Ben was rather polite. Many customers would have screamed at the clerk and stormed off muttering.

There is only one problem with the explanation. The timing. Unless the refined gasoline was held up the price you feel today is for what will be felt months from now by the supplier.
