Hey, wasn’t that a hangout in Santa Monica back in the 60’s?

Neither do I. Hope some kind “smart” reader will explain.

The ‘toon obviously refers to the new smartphones autocorrecting as one texts/types. Some of the inadvertent errors are hilarious. Check out damnyouautocorrect.com for a few belly laughs (I’m not affiliated BTW). However, I don’t know what “octopus” was autocorrected from. That’s usually half the joke. Anyone?

He’s probably composing his smoke symbols using Swype or some similar function. With Swype, you drag your finger across a virtual keyboard, not lifting your finger until a word is complete, and the device tries to predict what word you are attempting to type. 95% of the time it works amazingly well, but it can return some results that are doozies. When I swyped “octopus” into my phone, some of the options that the phone offered included “idylls,” “oxford,” and “proud.” If you use Swype and don’t pay attention before hitting “send,” there can be some very odd word substitutions.

There are always a bunch of people pretending they get it … it is kinda sad. So, if anyone has any idea … I think octopus is a random word, not a real AC error.

I think we all understand the “autocorrect” of today’s technology.

Apparently, the joke is somehow wrapped up in “octopus” – and nobody yet has sufficiently explained.
[]
First, I thought “Octoberfest” – but that doesn’t make sense in December. (Besides, it would properly be “Oktoberfest”!)
[]
I would appreciate somebody’s explanation (possibly the cartoonist?) because this is total nonsense as it exists.
