We drove from Michigan straight through to Monterey California… took 56 hours and we loved it… and the speed limits at the time were 55 and the car we took thought 55 was a wee bit fast…lol. The trip back we ‘raced’ the last 300 miles in front of a blizzard…ah memories…..

“Other people’s vacations” are the worst stories in the world.

It’s true. Endless highways and countless rest places with Waffle Houses and Wendy’s

I’ve tripped from coast to coast 13 times, and lots of short stuff in between.

Go West young man, and back again young lady, both of you being alive at any age.

I plan on an extended trip in 2014, and am still excited!

    Quit waiting; Do!
Then we can listen to your vacation travails’ rather than fine whines.

I made Oregon to Florida in 5 days. We didn’t push it at all. 5 days is easy

Traveler’s lament. “The sun has riz; the sun has set; but here I am, in Texas yet.”

Wife and I did it twice when we moved from DC to San Francisco. First trip was five days, which included lots of stops in between. Second trip we did in three, and was basically 14 hours on the road each day. (DC to Columbia, MO; Columbia, MO to Cheyenne, WY; Cheyenne to CA) That second trip SUCKED!

I took a Greyhound from Albuquerque to New Britain, CT. That was also a wretched mistake.

Several years ago I lost my job on the West Coast, drove east with 2 small children, stopped every night at a Motel 6. Every M-6 is designed the same. It seemed no matter how far we drove, we weren’t getting anywhere. It was like the M-6 version of Twilight Zone. At least Tom Bodett kept the light on for me.

Oh man, I hate road trips. I hate them so much.
But then, I was born and raised in central Texas, so going ANYwhere by car has ALWAYS meant 2 days driving through Texas. (As a child, I was utterly bewildered by people talking about driving into another state just for lunch or a shopping trip.)
metropolitan gnome is wrong; there are parts of the Texas landscape that are gloriously beautiful. But most of it is just endless boring emptiness.
