    Is Baldo set in Charlotte, North Carolina? The major paper there IS the Observer.

    @AshburnStadium

    And I have no doubt that is the only place in the world with a paper of that name. Just like New York and the Times…

    I love the comic strip because he it generally doesn’t whine about the “latino” condition in the world and just shows them as a normal American family. Let’s not start bringing up racism.

    Chita Rivera, Edward Villella. It is possible that many artists changed their names to something more “American,” and I don’t know who they might be without a lot more research. However, I agree there is a lack of Hispano- (and Latino-) AMERICAN artists, although there are other Spanish-speaking honorees. With the recent (as in past 15 years) of noted Hispano- and Latino- American accomplishments in the arts, there will be more recognized as they enter their elder years. I am more impressed with accomplishments and was thrilled when Maria Tallchief was honored – I didn’t even remember she was Native American – I just remembered her “Firebird.” I am usually in agreement with Srs. Cantu y Castellanos, but I don’t think it’s racist -just so many to choose from.

    Calling illegal aliens, illegal aliens does not make you a racist.

    My thought is that the number of honorees is not necessarily racist, but the instant reaction and assumption of the receptionist is rather.

    Um….with all due respect, are you suggesting that the committee select honorees based on ethnicity?

    I might add that the selection committee is almost certainly made up of very liberal people who are steeped in the arts. I seriously doubt they would exclude anyone based on race, gender, or ethnicity.

    hey, hey, I have a unique thought. Let’s give honor/position to people who have earned it!!!!

    Flake: Wait twenty years and see who’s the minority! With no majority in Texas, we already are. Of course, I can laugh, having always been one – Anglo-Saxon (I can’t find out which), Scot Celt, and Cherokee. Hybrid vigor is a good thing if it is natural rather than test-tube.

    Don’t you remember Rita Mareno? Awards galore! Grammy, Tony, Oscar, Emmy and another that I don’t recall the name of.

    Any time you make an issue about race, one way or the other, it’s racism. Period. Sergio is showing every bit as much racism in the first panel as the person on the phone is showing at the end; it’s just a different kind of racism. And it’s hypocritical to protest one kind while practicing another. If you don’t want to be judged negatively based on your race, don’t expect to be judged positively based on it either.

    •Plácido Domingo •Chita Rivera •Edward Villella and probably others. But you need to realize that it is a fairly new award and it is starting out with the old timers and there wasn’t a lot of hispanics in leading roles. Give it a few years to catch up to current stars. There isn’t any asians yet either. I am disapointed that this would go there as there are many minorities who have recieved this award.
