Noone claimed its supposed to be amusing all the time. Its just part of the storyline – or its a metaphor for them buying the boat. One seagull taking over the others perch.

It might even be a bit more symbolic…
The first seagull seems to be looking towards the Schooner, but the second seagull scares it off, and seems to stand defiantly as it protects it.
Maybe Gus has had enough of waiting for Arlo dragging his feet on deciding (how long has it been in comic strip time?)

Arlo wanted to buy a boat for years, but Janice resisted. Now Janice wants the boat and Arlo’s resisting. Sort of. That’s all.

Or, JJ created a filler strip and people are seeing what they want to see (including myself).

This is like a cigarette (God forbid) after se#. A culmination of desire for a boat that has reached its fulfillment. Saying things without words is what artists do. No need to get all poetic. They bought the boat. MOVE OVER!
