Goodness, Sleepy, I see no reason for the personal attack. This is a comment page and all I was doing was commenting.

They haven’t moved. Therefore it is the same background, just a little closer view. I like Ooola’s full figured look.

You can please all of the people some of the time*, some of the people all of the time, and some people just can’t be pleased— reason for the asterisk.

Look, at least Alley isn’t hiding in some bushes blubbering about how the bad guy is gonna kill him. I never forgot that in the worst strip I’ve seen in years (fortunately the strip has been rescued by the present team).

Night-Gauntlet, the worst strip I’ve seen in years isn’t/wasn’t this one. The Benders, whatever their other faults, haven’t turned Alley into a blubbering coward. For that, you have to go back a bit and see Dick Locher’s version of Dick Tracy. Here, at least Alley is likely to grab his war axe and give the opponent “what for”. That’s a lot more than Locher’s “Tracy” would have done.

You can find from 1932 to 1999. And there are tons of strips that have very little to no background in them.

Sleepy’s comments are like an echo here, and with some others who are too shy to write.

Now we have Ooola blubbering, Yochi the warrior prince talking like some college kid that said something wrong to his girlfriend and Alley ending up hugging them both. If the writing sucks people look to the art. One of them should be good or the insults will fly. Just look att he comments for the last 3 months.

    To Firebrand1:

Yesterday you wrote, “I’m not surprised that the syndicate has been satisfied with the Benders these last 10 years” Seriously? Their work has been god-awful. Go back and read the Benders’ output during the last decade. I’m reading the entire archive (up to 10/1/03) on this site and I have to say that the Benders’ Oop has some of the worst comic strip writing and artwork I’ve ever seen (sorry, I’m not familar with Dick Tracy). I’m not trying to pick on you but I’m still trying to understand what you find appealing about the output from Jack and Carole Bender.

Actually the early Peanuts did have backgrounds, especially the Sundays. The strength of the Peanuts strip was never the art, it was always the writing. Keep in mind, too, that there is a huge difference between a gag-a-day strip and a story strip, even if it is in a “bigfoot” style like Alley Oop. The expectation is that the backgrounds will help the reader vizualize the story to lend credence to the writing. The current Oop story, as rendered here, could be anywhere – the Benders have given us no feel at all for what the Mayan city-state or the surrounding environment is like. Great opportunity at the start of the story but absolutely squandered.

Good Morning Benders and all. Ooola’s tearing up Yoshi is
thinking like a idiot. If you look at the background between
frames 1 and 2 you will note that the trees and hill on the left
side of Ooola and Yoshi remain the same, maybe a little smaller but the pyramid in frame 2 is no longer to the right of another distant hill but now is now in front of the hill. This is to give you the feeling of watching Ooola from a moving
position. I suppose on a computer you could program in all
the objects and move them around but that would be a lot
of work thus refuting the silly oft repeated claim that the Benders are lazy. Actually reusing backdrops is a time honored method used by cartoonists for many years
especially for cartoon shows. I second the comment
Bender did great work on the background

And I second the comment that the backgrounds are repetitive and aren’t that great.

Definitely there are some bad strips out there, especially gag-a-day strips that just aren’t funny. I should more accurately sat that this version of Oop is one of the worst that I read. I’m still hoping that another team can turn this mess around because I know the potential for a great strip is still there.
