People. The big box stores put no one out of business. It’s the big box stores customers (you, perhaps) that put the independents out of business by not patronizing their stores any more. If you want to keep the independents around don’t patronize the chains and put them out of business.

I wonder if this strip will still be around in 10 years’ time, when there won’t be printed books at all anymore, except for gifts and such.

Please don’t use bad language, ’cause I can see what you are saying even with the symbols in the place of the letters.

The online stores are owned by the big chainstores.

I suppose you could carry titles that the big box stores don’t carry, and become the place to go for that difficult to find book.

Wait, I’m confused… are you trying to sell us on the online book sellers (“prices and limitless selection”) or brick & mortar stores? :-s

You have complained about this several times. You shouldn’t read the comments if you are so offended – or just skip over those. Even the comics themselves use these symbols from time to time. No one else has a problem with it – gosh darn it!

    ..
It’s not a matter of not having a problem with it. It’s acknowledging the fact that complaining about it only makes it worse.

And that’s exactly how a purely capitalistic systems works. Is it good or bad? It depends on the situation. The bad situation is a very deep pocketed enterprise moves in and under cuts until all the competition is driven out of business and then with no competition raises prices through the roof. But even those guys are held in-check buy the constant flow of new ideas and entrepreneurial spirit. Just the way Laura is doing now; keep at it Laura until you find the magic combination of ideas.

    ..
“Prices and limitless selection” applies to both. I’d prefer to patronize the independent stores, but I’m about twenty times more likely to find a book that interests me while browsing at Barnes & Noble — especially in the discount section. Most indy stores tend to be skimpy in the topics that appeal to me: science fiction, science, art instruction, cartoon collections, and graphic novels.
