I suppose you could carry titles that the big box stores don’t carry, and become the place to go for that difficult to find book.

I absolutely love the “indies”! But then, I love real books, not mass-produced junk. Even in Crete I discovered a little “hole-in-the wall” bookseller, and brought my tour group to meet him, and many folks purchased something. I doubt any of them would have bothered with a chain store. Plus, we met others from around the world, and after hours, had great conversations and new friends.
Admittedly, I slowed down when I realized I was acquiring a six foot tall bookcase about every five weeks. So I’m down to only seven of them, with books read over and over, and visitors are delighted. (I keep the paperbacks in another room-grin.)
