We still don’t know how the Romans made their incredible long-lasting concrete. I first read about Roman concrete about 50 years ago. I expected we would be able to recreate it within a short time.It is incredible that with the advances in our technology, we have not done so. Perhaps it has to do with curing times. The Romans would have been able to take their time for that.

I’ve never felt comfortable driving over large bridges. This doesn’t do anything to reassure me.

I was just reading in The Economist about this bridge. It was one of only a few of its type (which is fortunate). In 2016, an architect had said it would fail (no time to failure given). The article talks about how many bridges are suspect because of hard use.

The article does point out that traffic is larger than what the bridges were designed for and trucks are generally larger.

The Romans only had relatively low numbers of oxcarts, wagons & lightweight coaches to deal with, so they could last longer for that reason alone. But their concrete is still a mystery.

Anyway, the left “bridge” is an aquaduct, not a bridge. The only thing on it would have been a stream of water. (OK, an aquaduct is a kind of bridge. But its “traffic” doesn’t stress it nearly as much as with other kinds of bridges.)
