This has been going on since people in the area invented speech. Their default (and nearly unchangeable) setting is “get even for every slight, damage, or difficulty” and by “even” they mean “take a little more than they took from you”.
Do I condone the baby killing? Of course not, but their culture makes it inevitable. Do I blame Hamas? Of course. Do I blame Israel itself? Not really, but I do blame Israeli policy of treating the natives of the area as less than human… Which, see paragraph #1, they return, with interest. Do I think there’s a solution that allows all the parties to feel satisfied? Not one chance in a million millions. Do I think they’d accept a solution that leaves all parties equally unsatisfied? Nope.
I do think you could take a few individuals, in their youth, and raise them in a society where vendetta isn’t seen as useful and you might find that some of them could learn another way to cope. But I doubt it could work on groups larger than 5… nor on ages greater than… maybe 7 years old?
