    That only applies to out-and-back trips that don’t involve going through a marshy area1 and rivers that are completely unknown. Most of the time it’s better to do your trip with the flow.

    1 A slow current plus drifting channels means that it’s impossible to find your way through upstream unless you have info less than a month old. Most areas that do have people marking things only do it once a year and they may not mark every side channel..
