In my generation we were always enjoined to “remember the starving Chinese children” when we objected to whatever was served. It never made any sense to me as a child, and now when I realize it wasn’t about sending them our food, but about making us appreciate that we had some at all … it still doesn’t sense: We weren’t starving, and we did have tastier options that lima beans or liver.
