If charter schools want public funding then they should be accountable to the public, and held to the same standards of academics (including real science), admission, credentialing, etc.
The idea of having some degree of independence is fine, as long as public funds are not used for purposes from which public involvement is prohibited, such as religious indoctrination.
The problem is when there is a double standard — charter schools expect to suck at the public trough, but don’t want the responsibility that should reasonably go along with that.
