Have had something like that happen twice, once because a sparrow got trapped in our chimney pipe and when we freed it, flew through our house, much to the delight of our cats. We were able to avoid bloodshed by opening the garden doors. Recently one flew into our conservatory, while the cat was there as well. But I was able to catch the cat and put her inside the house, so the sparrow could calm down enough to find it’s way back out.
