I guess this is about how badly the FEEBs blew the Larry Nassar case? Or perhaps how poorly they did w/ the Kavanaugh investigation? Or Hillary’s emails? Or … In fairness, if you handle a gazillion cases, you ARE going to blow some of them. Even if every individual does their best. Which pretty clearly they don’t always…

‘Russiagate’ reality in 2016 was McConnell and Paul aides funneling Russian money to Trump

According to a press release put out by the DOJ Monday, the operatives — Jesse Benton and Doug Wead — have been indicted on conspiracy to solicit and cause an illegal campaign contribution by a foreign national, effect a conduit contribution and cause false records to be filed with the Federal Election Commission, among other offenses. The newly unsealed indictment from the U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. accused Benton and Wead of having “conspired together to solicit a political contribution from a Russian foreign national.”

the Eastman memo: previous guy had an actual plan to overthrow the election on 1/6

A new CNN report on Monday revealed a memo from a lawyer working with former President Donald Trump that detailed a plan to overturn his loss to Joe Biden on Jan. 6. The report reveals findings from the new book, “Peril,” by reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.

It included a copy of the memo from conservative law professor John Eastman, showing a six-point plan to leverage then-Vice President Mike Pence’s role as the president of the Senate to control Congress’s vote counting and throw out the votes of seven states.

This would leave Trump in the lead with 232 Electoral College votes over Biden’s 228. Then, according to Eastman, Democrats would let out “howls.” (The whole memo shows open contempt for Democrats.) But if they object, he argued, Pence could declare the election inconclusive, at which point it would move into the House. And because Republicans control a majority of the House delegations, they could select Trump to carry out a second term.

“The main thing here is that Pence should do this without asking for permission – either from a vote of the joint session [of Congress] or from the Court,” the memo said. “The fact is that the Constitution assigns this power to the Vice President as the ultimate arbiter. We should take all of our actions with that in mind.”

George W. Bush called out to his face over his war crimes in Iraq.

Former President George W. Bush was heckled at a speech about his eight years in office in Los Angeles. According to My News LA, Bush was met by thirty protestors outside the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. There were no arrests.

But it was inside where the fireworks were. Mike Prysner, an Iraq war veteran and activist, interrupted Bush during his speech, shouting:

“Mr. Bush, when are you going to apologize for the million Iraqis dead because you lied? You lied about WMDs – you lied about connections to 9/11 – you lied about Iraq being a threat! You sent ME to Iraq in 2003! My friends are dead!”- Mike Prysner

“Pennsylvania Republicans invade voters’ privacy in service of the ‘big lie’”

Pennsylvania law prohibits the public release of a voter’s driver’s license number and Social Security number. But that’s not stopping Republican lawmakers from seeking sensitive information on voters.

Republicans want to know by what method each person voted, whether in-person or by mail, absentee or provisional ballot, as well as information on when each registered voter last cast a ballot. The subpoena also seeks records of communication between state and county election officials.

Republicans insist the undertaking has nothing to do with Trump or trying to overturn last year’s presidential election. OK, sure.

Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, is right to accuse Republicans of undermining democracy, capitulating to Trump’s conspiracy theories and perpetuating lies that led to the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

“Senate Republicans would rather cater to the fringe elements of their party who still are perpetuating the Big Lie rather than focus on issues that affect Pennsylvanians’ lives,” Wolf said in a statement.

Trump ‘Wants Back’ the Presidency, But His Only Agenda is to Serve Himself: Bob Woodward

Bob Woodward assessed that Donald Trump is very much interested in becoming president again, but warned that the repercussions of that scenario would not address the country’s needs.

“This is someone who wants back into the presidency, and he believes the Republican Party is still very much in his grip,” Costa continued. “Even though there are others out there with ambition like Vice President [Mike] Pence and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, it’s President Trump who really wants back, based on our reporting.”

Woodward expanded from there by saying that if Trump ever does get back into the White House, the question is “to do what?”

“The answer is to be Donald Trump,” he answered. “That is not an agenda. That does not connect to the needs of the people in the country. His disconnect from that, the struggle that people are engaged in, he has no idea.”

Woodward concluded by saying the purpose of his book was for people to ask “what did [Trump] do with the presidency? Why were there so many people who held him in disdain? They would checkmate him because he would have very ideas bad ideas, even bad ideas for him.”

‘Where is everybody?’ Rachel Maddow delivers brutal takedown of last weekend’s sparsely attended MAGA rally

“Where is everybody?” she asked, laughing at the small crowd.

She explained that there seemed to be multiple police and guard troops for every protester in attendance. At one point, Maddow said that even the media seemed to outnumber the crowd.

“When there is a big march or rally in Washington, a big gathering sometimes news outlets will use like, you know, crowd size experts or aerial views of the crowd to do a bunch of complicated math to try to approximate the size of the crowd. In this case, you could just literally just kind of eenie, meenie money, moe, count them all up by hand,” said Maddow. “Capitol Police said in total there were around 400 people or so milling around that site at the front of the Capitol on Saturday but most of the 400 were not actually protesters.”

She showed a photo of a man who appeared to be wearing a dead badger on his head surrounded by cameras.

“This guy was counted as two though because of him and his badger,” joked Maddow. “Why wouldn’t you count the badger?”

‘Oh my God Jesus’: Paul Ryan floored when he learned of Trump White House chaos — according to Woodward book

After Trump left Ryan asked Marc Short, an adviser to Mike Pence who took over legislative matters for Trump, “What the hell was that?”

“It’s like this every day around here,” Short said according to the book.

“Oh my God. Jesus,” Ryan replied. He had no idea.

’You’ve changed’: Kevin McCarthy confronted Trump during phone call over his election loss

It was after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) made a panicked call to Trump as his congressional office was being destroyed by the insurrectionists. Trump notoriously told McCarthy, “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.”

With Trump writing his note to incoming President Joe Biden, he called McCarthy to tell him it was done.

“McCarthy grew emotional,” the book describes. “Trump was not going to be attending the inauguration. It was a far cry from their sessions at Mar-a-Lago and on Air Force One, where they traded political stories and ate Starbursts, Trump’s favorite candy.”

“I don’t know what happened to you in the last two months,” McCarthy told Trump. “You’re not the same as you were for the last four years. You’ve done good things and you want that to be your legacy. Call Joe Biden.”

The idea that Trump was somehow “different” or that he “changed” has become a thread from some of the Republicans featured in the book. Former Speaker Paul Ryan was similarly shocked in 2018 when Trump had an Oval Office meltdown. He was told at the time that it was like that every day. He had no idea.

This summer, Carol Leonig and Phil Rucker’s book I Alone Can Fix It described an Election Night scene in which Eric Trump had a complete meltdown as it became clear his father would lose.

“The election is being stolen. Where are these votes coming from? How is this legit?” he raged according to the book.

The authors described Trump yelling “at the campaign’s data analysts, as if it were their fault that his father’s early leads over [Joe] Biden were shrinking” — and he screamed, “We pay you to do this. How can this be happening?”

In the new book Peril, from Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, Eric Trump’s lack of understanding about elections continued to become evident to everyone on the Trump team.

    Trump quietly unleashes his mob

As Rauchway points out, “the president was willing to find authority in the mob if he lacked it in the law.” It’s entirely possible that if the mob had succeeded in finding House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or the vice president or had been able to corner some of those elected officials in the Capitol that day, Trump would have gone along with it. All the recent books, including “Peril” have Trump watching the event unfold and being unmoved by exhortations to step in from everyone from his daughter Ivanka to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, to whom he reportedly said, “well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.”

Trump is still flouting the law and openly condoning the violent insurrection. As Rauchway said, he “finds authority in the mob.” He’s always engaged in lurid rhetoric and has nudged his followers and police to beat protesters and the like. But starting with his calls to “liberate” states that were trying to mitigate the spread of the pandemic, he has been backing insurrectionist and vigilante activity. And his followers are listening.
