While I love Trudeau and his brilliant cartoons, and while there are many many reasons to complain about this president’s response to CoVid-19, the truth is that if you try to make any comparison of countries, regions or policies, you should just wait. In November after day 225, the EU number of new cases per day exceeded the US.. But then, in December, around day 270 the US rose again to exceed the EU numbers…

(Or the equivalent OurWorld In Data graph at this tinyURL: https://tinyurl.com/yxsovs27 ).

Most administrative regions have had good or bad luck with this pandemic, that can overwhelm the good or bad leadership by those regions.

That said, I agree with the cartoon’s point that this president’s leadership has been lacking.

For each of the past 4 years the number of murders in New York have been below all reported years as far back as 1928. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_New_York_City). The violent crime rate in the US has been falling decade by decade since the early 1990s. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violent_crime#/media/File%3AViolent_Crime_in_the_United_States.png) let’s not let the news media make episodic events make us forget the positive trends, both in the US but also in the world. (http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/foreigners/2014/12/the_world_is_not_falling_apart_the_trend_lines_reveal_an_increasingly_peaceful.html). Of course we ought not cease to work to improve the world further.

@WolfEmperor is correct, The hammer and sickle symbol is inappropriately used here in this cartoon, it belongs to the communist party, not the Russia United party. Things change, and Russia has changed since the Soviet Union collapsed. The repressive and kleptocratic Russia United party’s official ideology is “Russian Conservativism.”

According to Wikipedia, “Although the United Russia Party’s popularity declined from its peak of 64.4% in the 2007 Duma elections to 49.32% in the 2011 elections, it remained the most popular party in the country, ahead of the second-placed Communist Party at 19.19%. In the 2016 elections it received 54.2%, while the second-place Communist Party received 13.3%.”

Post-Soviet Russia, much like China today, are not ideologically Communist, they are nearly capitalist. Putin’s United Russia party at its peak won 64.4% in the 2007 Duma elections dropping to 49.32% in the 2011 elections, United Russia remains the most popular party in the country, ahead of the second-placed Communist Party at 19.19%.(According to Wikipedia)These post-communist states are totalitarian and nationalistic and are successfully expanding their territories. They militantly control their minority populations and they do not recognize the civil rights of their dissidents.

“I will tell you this, Russia: If you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Mr. Trump said at a news conference in Florida, July 27, 2016. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”http://www.politico.com/story/2016/07/trump-putin-no-relationship-226282

The hammer and sickle is a communist symbol popularized by the Soviet Union and the International communist parties. While still used by the communist parties in post-soviet regions it is hardly appropriate for Russia today.

Mr. Putin leads the “United Russia” Party, which is at odds with the Communist party.

According to Wikipedia: “Although the United Russia Party’s popularity has declined from its peak of 64.4% in the 2007 Duma elections to 49.32% in the 2011 elections, United Russia remains the most popular party in the country, ahead of the second-placed Communist Party at 19.19%.”

The “United Russia” party has little ideological coherence beyond declaring its ideology “Russian Conservativism.” Basically, it is a party of power, and has had strong support in the democratic elections since 1999.

I’ve never understood how my fellow conservatives could be against the EPA mission. If a neighbor pollutes the water running into your land it is theft.

The same goes for your air, your radio spectrum or your groundwater.

Conservatism as I was raised to understand it is to defend each other’s right to swing their arms about as they please unless they hit your nose.

“We have the house, the senate and the white house.” …And soon the Supreme Court. The popular vote went the other way, but I can still recognize a rout when I see it. We’ve a totally Republican controlled government now. I hope you folks do good and not what I fear you will do. I pray that you are compassionate, have humility and are as principled. I hope that you make America greater than it has ever been, but not at the expense of minorities or other decent people of the world.
