I’m one of many quiet readers who seldom/never comment. Three thoughts on this: One, I don’t recall physical abuse so Joanie may have thought the kids would be more secure and stable with husband. Given the times, she was probably right. Two, leftwingpatriot was right in his comment about Garry writing from a 24 yr old standpoint. Three, I am in love with LWP.
In the 1960’s, Dad was so adamantly against smoking, I thought there must be something to it and tried it a few times. Lucky that my friends generally didn’t smoke—my ill little sis wasn’t so lucky. Dad is now going on 103, btw.
I think she is attracted to him (although if we saw this previously, I must have missed it) and also very much afraid–both are scary situations in themselves (as I recall, being a sixty-ish woman from the 60’s) but the combination would definitely set off alarm signals. We will see what happens.
