Is Olivia Jaimes British? Somebody who doesn’t celebrate Mother’s Day today. We all know that Nancy is motherless and living with her aunt, but to portray the aunt as an absentee aunt today of all days is surprising. The last frame as the young girl left alone on Mother’s Day in a stark and furniture less room without even curtains on the window is so full of pathos and sadness it is depressing.

There is a shadow figure in the kitchen. Call in the Ghost Hunters.

I must admit, Ms. Jaimes is getting more clever as time passes.

Yes, Nancy. A owl is not scary enough. Try something like a big scarey scarecrow or two. It’ll keep your garden safe from pests eating it. Having a nice juicey snack.

Now this is interesting: true Jaimes/Bushmiller fusion. It’s yet another of the “mind games” gags Olivia seems to favor, but the punchline is an excellent visual gag in the Bushmiller style rather than just a thought balloon that reveals a character to be inconsistent or hypocritical. Moreover, there is a thematic echo: the cartoonist could have dreamed up any random excuse for Nancy to use to get Fritzi out of the kitchen, but the actual one used—the fake owl—foreshadows the “fake Fritzi”. This is a well-constructed gag all around. More, please!

What I love about the Nancy/Fritzi relationship is that they both clearly have similar minds, but Nancy would never dare to think that anyone else could beat her at her own game (and to be fair it’s often true).

The day she realizes that other people can think like she does is the day she becomes unstoppable.
