We are just outside of Coalinga, CA with a flat tire. The roadside assistance is on their way, and we have found a new tire in Coalinga, coincidentally the same tire shop that is sending out the roadside assistance. We are very fortunate that we did not have a blowout (been there, done that). The tread is shedding from the tire but it is still holding air surprisingly well. Also fortunately, this is the shortest leg of our trip, so we have plenty of time and only about a 2 hour drive to go.
Yesterday we went out of our way and visited the Jelly Belly factory. It was a lot of fun and wow do they have a lot of flavors! Yes we bought some, we each bought a small bag of our own favorite flavors – Michael likes a lot of the fruit flavors, and I go more for the oddball ones like buttered popcorn and toasted marshmallow. A restful night at the KOA in Los Banos,CA (yes, I know that means “the bathrooms” in Spanish – if you put a tilde over the n) and we were on our way again by 9 this morning.
Today’s scenery is typical So CA, brown grass everywhere. The only problem is that this is the Central Valley, one of the big farming areas in the country. The farmers are being cut off from their water supply by Governor Moonbeam. There are signs all over like “Is growing food wasting water?” and “Trains or Food?” (the latter being a reference to Brown’s pet project the bullet train). I know there’s a drought here, but I think the politicians priorities are a bit skewed. Yesterday’s was more of the grapes and a few twisty roads through oak forests.
The tow truck just arrived so we should be on our way shortly now. It’s about 80 degrees outside and warming up in here because of the sun on the side windows. I will be glad to get the AC back on. We haven’t had to use it for 2 weeks!
