Another thought on the motives of the makers of policy. This is a generalization and therefore I present it only as one person’s limited observation.
I went to an elite college and then I went to an elite graduate school and then I taught at an elite university, and I got to know some people who have taken high positions in both the Clinton administration and in George Bush’s administration. People whose names you all know well. And these people – both Republicans and Democrats – deeply and sincerely believed that they were better than the rest of us. I fear that most of the policy makers feel that way. And that makes a difference to how they make policy.
I hope it’s clear I’m not talking about people who work for the government. That’s a different group entirely.
