There goes Lisa Benson again, embarrassing herself by commenting on a subject she knows absolutely nothing about. Completely clueless as to what “defund and dismantle” means.
IT DOES NOT MEAN GET RID OF PUBLIC SAFETY.
It means to get rid of highly militarized combat troops whose first response is aggression rather than de-escalation, terrorizing instead of protecting and serving certain segments of the society and replace them with service and protection agencies that will actually protect and serve.
Sure, there are some excellent police departments, others that need some minor or major reforms, and some that are so hopelessly broken that they cannot be reformed or repaired: they must be completely defunded, dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up with new leadership, new staffing and new attitudes.
Cases in point: Aurora police murdered Elijah McClain because he was “acting suspicious.” He was walking home from a convenience store carrying a bag of groceries. He was unarmed. He was listening to music and moving with the beat. He was in his own neighborhood. The only thing about him that was “suspicious” was that HIS SKIN WAS DARK. There was no probable cause to stop him. There was no reason to put him in a choke hold, inject him with drugs, and snuff the life out of him.
Now, it is reported that an unspecified number of Aurora police officers went to the site, laughed and made fun of the murder and took photos in various poses, including reenacting the chokehold murder. And this as they are aware public concern is heightened!
Or in Minneapolis or Buffalo or Atlanta, where police brutalize PEACEFUL unarmed citizens and, when disciplined, their fellow officers walk off the job.
In such departments the mentality is so pervasive that it cannot be fixed. The only solution is to surgically remove the entire cancer and start over.
