Is Lisa Benson just itching to show how abysmally uneducated she is about the basic history of how the two major political parties reversed positions on social and racial justice issues?
Yes, in the mid 1800’s the Democratic Party was the party of the “Solid South,” representing the Deep South and slave owners and, after slavery, Jim Crow.
The nascent Republican party, led by its first president, Abraham Lincoln, was the party of the Northeast. It was the party of the abolitionists, and those opposed to slavery.
Over time (more expanded detail in my reply to this comment, that won’t fit in the initial comment), the parties gradually reversed positions on racial and social justice.
Lincoln was a Northern Liberal. As the rest of the nation has reversed on social justice issues in the last 150 years, so also Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Eisenhower would not, today, recognize the racist, pro-Nazi, pro-Confederate Trumpublican party of today.
So yes, the Democratic Party of 150 years ago to 60 years ago had a history with the KKK. The Democratic party did not start the KKK, but the KKK was founded by racists who were Democrats.
And if you don’t believe the parties have reversed roles on racial and social justice, consider that it is the “PARTY OF LINCOLN” that has its supporters raising the Confederate flags that Lincoln literally waged a war to crush in humiliating defeat.
It is the Democrats of today who want to tear down the statues of the Confederacy — the monuments to slavery and Jim Crow — and today’s Republicans who want to preserve their cherished “heritage” (OF SLAVERY).
The Democrats’ ugly racist PAST is the Republicans’ ugly racist PRESENT.
