No biggie, really. I’ve used a VPN for years, and I still get spammed. This will not increase the sheer volume of spam you get, it will merely, supposedly, target you more closely. I doubt it, really. I don’t think browsing habits will help advertisers increase their revenue much if at all. If you’re not into ped*philia / kiddie p*rn you have little to worry about. In addition to the VPN I use ad blocking software. I recently had to change my ad blocking software as various websites can detect the one I was using and they blocked their content until I whitelisted them. I refused, and went elsewhere.
But it will not be too much longer before advertisers catch on to the fact that internet ads bring little revenue for the dollar spent. Then we are going to have a pay-to-see internet, much as things are with cable TV. There will be tiers of sites for your browsing for a set fee each month. The way that broadcast TV stations are now shaking down cable and satellite TV companies for increased fees for content available for free over the antenna will happen on the internet when CNN, MSNBC, Fox and the rest realize they can demand fees from ISPs for carrying their websites as TV carries local and pay channels. Even though you pay through the nose for those channels, you STILL get all sorts of ads and commercials.
For you serial jerkers, p*rn will probably be next of the classes of internet viewing to be strictly on-demand pay websites. Followed by high demand viewing. Netflix and Hulu and others are already pay on demand. Look for it to increase until things on the internet are as bad as things are now on satellite and cable TV.
