We need to hear from some of the Democratic candidates who are offering policy proposals a suggestion that the Department of Justice, created by statute under authority of the Constitution, is moved out of the cabinet to become an independent agency, appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, but thereafter entirely independent with a prohibition on any interference from the White House and not subject to firing absent specific cause and with the consent of the Senate, in the same manner as the Post Office (in which the Postmaster General was a Cabinet position until Nixon moved it out of the cabinet to independent status) or the Federal Reserve.
