The news footage out of the Texas coast is very disturbing, and I imagine myself in those poor peoples’ place. My brother lives in San Antonio, and the graphics of the storm area put it somewhere on the radius. But just to show you how conditions differ within such a big state, my brother says there’s been very little rain so far where he lives.
But despite the misery and destruction, research the storm that leveled Galveston in the early 20th century: Many thousands killed. If Science can’t yet stop such storms, the orbiting weather satellites can give advance warnings that help to lessen the impact. Too bad that evacuations weren’t planned well ahead and put in place. But does any city or state have adequate plans for these frequent “500 Year” events? Maybe there should be fewer sports arenas and more disaster preparedness structures.
