Mr. Lucas probably broke his heart again with some decision with the Star Wars franchise… That or the Gobbit is like the Lord of the Schwings, i.e. same character names and locations, but that was about the only things that were the same as the Tolkien books.I’ve never understood that type of thing— spend that level of money and then change the story for no apparent reason other than “artistic license” (which is ego gone stratospheric) and thus making the fans angry that it’s supposedly intended to be marketed to. Which is why so many authors won’t allow their books to be made into movies, myself included. It’s one thing if one can’t afford to do an entire book and thus has to make sacrifices. That;s understandable. It’s another when one can afford to do it right, but one just wants to change it, just to change it. Well, then don’t call it by the book’s name, then. It’s not the book.
