Not long ago I timed the news broadcast from our most popular local TV station. In a half hour news program, I got just under eleven minutes of actual news (and about a quarter of that was repetitive weather forecasts). Items I tallied as “not news” or advertisements included editorializing, commenting after stories, announcements of “upcoming stories”, and their long goodbye sequence at the end. BTW, usually their announcements of “upcoming stories” took more time than they devoted to those stories themselves.
They like to claim that they are “#1 in local news”, but that’s a pretty low bar to hurdle since all of the TV stations around here are just as bad.
