In terms of men’s soccer, the top national team as of the April 2019 FIFA world rankings is Belgium, followed by France, Brazil, England, and Uruguay. The US is 24th on the list behind Senegal and ahead of Romania. Perhaps if the talent pool wasn’t thinned due to the influence of baseball, basketball, football, and hockey being more lucrative opportunities for young US male athletes, in contrast to soccer being the top opportunity for male athletes in most other countries, then maybe the US would be ranked closer to the top or at the top like the women’s team. They don’t need a basic soccer for dummies book; they need to find ways to attract better male athletes at a younger age and keep them focused on soccer.
