Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for January 03, 1981
Transcript:
Voice from TV: Mrs. Reagan, when did you first acquire your handgun? Nancy Reagan: It was back when Ronnie was touring the country for G.E. Hollywood was just swarming with Communists in those days, and Ronnie felt I shouldn't be alone in the house without protection. But it's no big deal. It's just this tiny little thing with very pretty mother-of-pearl inlay and little daisies etched on the barrel. Voice: And what does it shoot? Nancy: Teeny-weeny, lady-like bullets.
I gre up reading Mr. Trudeau’s creation. but it wasn’t until I had grown older and had re-read his work, did I realize just how petty some of his art becomes.
It’s almost as if he has no liberal heroes to look toward. And, taking into account this strip was created at the end of the Carter one-hit wonder, I guess he had a lot of angst to work out.
Think of it: Carter was hailed as a new era in the political landscape. The Republicans and Conservative thought would be on the decline for generations. And in four short years, it was over and the ascendency of the Reagan years was upon us.
Much like our current situation with Obama. The packaging was so much better than the actual product. I’m sure in two years, when Obama has finished his one and only term, the next conservative will be subjected to the same bong-hit inspired brilliance seen here.
This blind faith in liberal politics is sort of pathetic, in a way. No matter how many times the liberal thought process is proven to false, they just keep coming back. It’s almost like a co-dependency.
