Actually, the dilemma you present is fake. For the most part of the last 6 decades, the US had a much more progressive tax code. Yet the middle class existed - and grew - in the 50s and 60s, and people DID grow rich.
In fact, most people seem to have less chance to “accumulate a bit of wealth” since the 80s than they did before.
