I saw my seventh grade home room teacher in the supermarket. By then I was old enough to understand, but I wasn’t thrilled. My feeling was more like “Can’t I get away?” I did a big comedy take, and she wondered what was wrong with me.
During summer vacation I saw my high school algebra teacher at a yard sale in Daisy Duke short shorts; seeing that much leg fried me for at least two months…
When we’re very young, we take things literally. We see teachers at school, why wouldn’t we think that’s where they belong? We only know our classmates have homes because we all arrive and leave together, and we’ve been to some of their houses. But by fifth grade I understood the truth, because my teacher only lived a block away from the school, and she was part of out trick-or-treating circuit.
This blew my kids’ minds the first time it happened to us (saw a teacher at the store). All of a sudden, they were speechless, and they could only say, “What are you doing here?” :-)

oddly enough I think alot of us think the teachers do live at school at that age

My mom is a teacher, so I can vouch that they have a life outside of the school.
