Here’s an article that shows a country losing its sense of self respect and that for others because of the austerity it is going through.‘HIV crisis in Greece blamed on prostitutes’A couple of things bugged me about this story: it shows a nation forgetting about common decency as it becomes mired in poverty. Its politicians try to smear others, the more vulnerable, for their woes: illegal migrants (also note in another story about the Greek athelete expelled from the London Games over her racist tweet) and now prostitutes. No longer any medical privacy in Greece, it seems. The real reason for the higher HIV rate? Cut backs on the needle -exchange programme, desperate women taking to sex work to make ends meet and accepting more dangerous liasons, more people in despair taking to drugs and, from the reaction of the nation to the austerity, less tolearance for others; more extremism, more desperation. Am I criticising the Greeks? Oh yes, but I also am well aware what is causing this extremism. We are pushing this nation into it. With every sneer, contemptuous remark and derisive comment on their national character we push them further along this path. What the hell are we, and they, doing to them(selves)?

uk said their gdp contracted again. spain still has 25% unemployment. austerity is not working. austerity won’t improve the economy or create jobs.
