Place a microphone and a recorder in the forest and see what it picks up. Besides, the same could be said for any sound, any where. ;=)

A much better question would be: How do I know that the color I see as red is the same color that you call red? Maybe what you’re seeing would be blue to me.

Yes but we never truly know if Fate pushed us in the direction of what we view as a random choice.

Just because there may not be a human there, the tree falling still makes a sound. Just because I don’t see the bear do his business in the woods, I still watch where I step.

How does one define free will? How would you even know if you were or were not exercising your free will? “You” are a prisoner of your brain, a biological computer that is a neural network which can easily be reprogrammed through sensory input, injury, surgery, or defect. Your free will is limited by the constraints, or parameters, that your brain will permit.

Shakespeare: “There’s a destiny that shapes our ends, rough-hew them how we will.” Fate and free will in the same sentence, and both true. And yes, I’m cribbing from Robert A. Heinlein. :).As for that damn tree…is there such a thing as objective reality? If so, then of course the tree makes a sound — whether or not it’s heard is irrelevant. And if not? Then the tree, the world, the keyboard I’m typing this on, and all of you, only exist inside my skull. (Well, actually, no; my physical body would be included in that.) Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream…and it’s All About Me. Pfui! — given a choice between objective reality and infantile solipsism, I choose objective reality. Why? Because, subjectively, it’s less distasteful to me. And yes, I recognize the irony in that..Philosophy is for people who have absolutely nothing else to do with their time that would be beneficial to themselves or to anybody else, so they waste it on meaningless mental games. Take that, Socrates!

As Harry Mudd would say: “I never tell the truth. I am lying to you right now.”

Absolutely hilarious! Next time someone brings up trees falling in the forest I’m going to use that line.

If Bucky’s response to Rob’s “It’s an unanswerable question” observation doesn’t underscore the fact that Bucky was and is the ongoing voice of reason in this strip, then the chipmunk referenced two panels later died in vain.

It just means that some things can’t be described but can only be experienced. You can write a book about sound but until you hear, you won’t understand. Ta da !!!

From now on, when friends wish to engage in political discussions, I shall just say: pu pu pu puAnd for your illumination, my union organizer Manx, Ruti, says “shnur” when he is disgruntled…which is all the time because it is impossible to organize cats.

I wonder, how many animals were harmed in making this cartoon? PETA has been alerted. But, the other question is how many humans were harmed. By the comments, I’m thinking a lot!
