$8.34 a gallon in New Zealand right now. Diesel is cheaper, but you have to add a road tax. Oddly , they still seem reluctant to blow people up to get it cheaper.
False view? The international perception (and increasingly within the US, too) was that the Iraqi war was indeed about oil despite protestations to the contrary and never-minding that the exact opposite happened with the price of oil after the subsequent occupation of Iraq. Same thing is happening again though; increasing the heat on Iran is causing some of the increase in the oil price.

For some reason, thinking about a war in that area is pretty much the only thing that makes the tar sands look like a good idea.
