Actually, soccer(real FOOTball), like horse racing, and “American” football, is going toward huge spending and dependence on gambling to sustain it?
It is very “American” to gamble, on anything, poker, craps, horses, football, politics, and war. The problem is that we aren’t smart enough to realize that sucker bets like roulette, “free markets”, and “blind faith”, are a bad way to build a sound future.
