how sad to comment on “typical pit bull” – it’s not a bad dog, it’s bad dog owners. Pit bulls are good dogs – it’s bad owners that don’t teach them manners and leave them chained up all day. Or worse owners that teach them to fight.

and no I’m not a pit bull owner now, but I had one years ago and he was a good dog, loved kids, good in the house, just territorial about his yard.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Look up cllips of Spanky and Our Gang, their dog Petey was a Pitt Bull. The agression can be bred out of a type of dog. They did it with the English Bull Terrier (“Spuds Mackenzie”) They were once fighting dogs, now are sweet, smart, and a little clownish. It’s the people breeding and training Staffordshire and American Staffordshire Terriers (also Rottweillers and German Shepherds to name a few others) for aggression. These dogs have all the potential for sweetness and a lot less aggression. I never forget though that all dogs and cats are Predators, Responsible people don’t let their animals become a menace or a danger to society.

I have an English Bull Terrier – he’s a 40+ lb. snuggly cuddly lap dog – yet we still have people react to him in a negative manner (oh, pit bull stay away!) even though he looks nothing like a pit bull. With Bull Terriers and any other dog including pit bulls it’s how they are raised, socialized and to a large extent the breeding that makes them aggressive or not.

Petey, the dog in all those Little Rascals (or Our Gang, if you prefer) short features, was a “pit bull.” when properly trained (and that’s the key) they are reported to be one of the best breeds of dogs for getting along with children. Any dog that isn’t trained properly can be a danger.

Boston Terriers were also originally created to be fighting dogs. They actually have almost all the same breeds in their background, except more of the smaller bull dogs and terriers were added to the Boston’s breeding stock to bring down the size to have a light weight fighter. As for pit bulls themselves, until the bad guys ruined their reputation, pit bulls were considered great family dogs.
