The term anti-semitism has always made me scratch my head because:“The term Semite means a member of any of various ancient and modern Semitic-speaking peoples originating in southwestern Asia, including; Akkadians (Assyrians and Babylonians), Eblaites, Ugarites, Canaanites, Phoenicians, Hebrews (Israelites, Judeans and Samaritans), Arameans, Chaldeans, Amorites, Moabites, Edomites, Hyksos, Arabs, Nabateans, Maganites, Shebans, Sutu, Maltese, Mandeans and Ethiopian Semites”“Antisemitism (also spelled anti-semitism or anti-Semitism) is suspicion of, hatred toward, or discrimination against Jews for reasons connected to their Jewish heritage.”Things that make you go, hmmmm.

In the U.S. in the 1920’s it was the rise of “nativism”, that excluded actual “natives” like Hawaiians, Apache.Crow/etc, or any “non-white”. It is alive and well again, xenophobia is rampant and, oddly, as the supposed “left” was responsible in the 20’s, today it comes from “the right”.

The term “Semite” was hijacked to represent a small group from only one of the tribes. Folks today, a relatively small group of bigots and xenophobes, who want to make the term exclusive, have also hijacked “American”.
