They are boojums (a green all over desert plant) in a severe drought.

lol! Incidentally, today for some reason I kept thinking back to that one F Minus cartoon where there’s a creature with the body of a horse and the tiny upper body of a duck… I kept cracking up randomly at work thinking about it!
Okay other comics strips have dark humor. This one and the single panel-ones like Close To Home and (Ugh) Frog Applause are classified as “off-beat.”
