Mack’s teams were either one of the best teams in MLB, or the worst. There rarely was any middle-ground. He’d build a powerhouse, and when he wasn’t able to afford those players (because he was ALSO the Athletics’ owner), he’d sell them. That’s how they could appear in the World Series in 1914, and then finish with a 43-109 record in 1915 (they’d finish last for seven consecutive seasons). Their best season was in 1931 (107-45), but it would take 40 years (and stops in Kansas City and Oakland) before they’d appear in another World Series in 1971.

Ah, yes – the American system of measurement – based on the football field (length and area) the quarter (time) the beer cup (volume) and the linebacker (mass).

Mack did not wear a baseball uniform and managed from the dugout which he rarely left.

Ah yes, the American who accepts the accelerating mediocrity of the country by hating anyone who dares to question why it’s not living up to its full potential.
