I mean, can you imagine some guy writing a letter to the editor that begins... 'Dear Sir, as an idiot, I was greatly offended by...'" Pig says, "...the comic strip 'Pearls Before Swine.'"

Rat has a point. Millions of reader might read it, but each of them reads it individually. Thus, each and every one of them will think he’s talking about everyone else, not themselves. Excluding Pig, naturally.
