Thanks for reminding me about that, sallymargaret! I’m notorious for forgetting things I’ve written or drawn in the strip before…partly because I almost never re-read older strips. So I’d completely forgotten that CJ’s wife ran off with the tennis coach.

The best example of this involves Nate’s nemesis, Gina. At one point several years ago, in the context of a particular strip, I had to give her a last name. So I called her Gina Hemphill. Then, only a couple years later, I needed to refer to her last name, and I completely forgot I’d already given her one…so I named her Gina Toms. Now I’ve finally got it figured out. Her name’s Gina Hemphill-Toms.

It all a matter of specific gravity. Fat and air floats, muscle and bone sink. It is just a matter of what part of body mass predominates. Most have enough air to get a .95 specific gravity and float – barely.

Marcus is supposed to be African American, but the still relatively new practice of printing daily comics in color means that sometimes things get mixed up. I do not color the daily strips myself — only the Sundays. So often, despite all best efforts, there are colors in the daily strips that I wouldn’t necessarily choose myself.
