Somewhere else I sighed with relief a deal had been already struck with the IMF as regards Portugal so DSK’s arrest had no real effect as far as I know. Why should I sigh with relief? I’m not in Portugal, I’m not affected by its woes, I’m just Portuguese, so why would I feel relieved? Interesting emotion. Perhaps just empathy with fellow compatriots. Is that still nationalism? Why would I not feel with the Greeks. Anyway…The cartoonist is Brazilian. The last 10 years has shown Portugal the changing tide of global influence excercised by some nations. Before Portugal was patronisingly extending its hand to Brazil, Angola and other former colonies. Now, especially after the ratification of the ortographic accord and after Lula’s excellent administration of Brazil, it realises its former colony might (hopes?) be the one patronisingly extending its hand to her. It reminds me of the “special relationship” enjoyed by the USA & the UK.Humbling at any rate.
