I don’t think the monarchy still has its place in Canada because it belongs to another country and is so not us but you gotta admit queen’s looking fine for her age and the responsability she’s been under for 57 years.

If she hangs on, she could beat her great-great grandmother queen Victoria’s record 64 (or 65, not sure) year reign. At 82, she certainly looks healthier and stronger than queen vicky looked when she was her age.

I still amazed that the queen can disband your parliament or veto your laws.

She seems to have more power over Canada than England.

Even when the Queen is actually in Canada, she can’t preside over the debates at the Commons or at the Senate. She is represented by the Governor General who has to sign the laws, theorically can veto bills, but never does and is not expected to do so. The Governor-General had a pretty big role in settling a political crisis no later than last december, though.

I respect the Queen and the tradition she represents in England which goes back to almost a millenium but that tradition is English, not Canadian. The English did not made Canada. The natives lived in it for centuries, the vikings, the french and the basque explored it, the french settled it and the british conquered it in 1763, more than half a century late to the game (for europeans, that is). Modern Canada is a composite of that history. The people who made Canada are those who work, write, have ideas and share it from St. John’s to Vancouver ot Iqualuit.

London has a respectable tradition, they gave orders but it’s the peasants here that did all the work. What we are now, we owe it to those who worked, who lived on these fields, forests and shores (oh, and on snow, too). From our coins to our courts, now we should be able to look up to the people who made that possible, not a foreigner that is a sign of oppression to many although she, herself, did nothing wrong.
