they had definitely invented remotes for the TV when I was a kid (80’s and 90’s) but my grandparents (whose farm i grew up on) didn’t have 1 so us kids did have to be the channel changers!
I remember when we got our first TV. It was 1953. I was 6 years old. We had two channels on that old black and white set. We were in hog heaven. Like having a movie theater in your living room. It went off the air at midnight. But we were in bed looooong before that anyway!

Where/when I grew up we got 2, maybe 3 channels. 4 if the weather was right.
