Did he call them that because he didn’t know how to spell maracas? Or because no one else would have known what maracas are?

Neither one. He could do a spell check on maracas, and anyone who didn’t know what the term meant could have Googled it, if they couldn’t tell from the picture. I just think that samba shakers sounds funnier then maracas. I can just picture Poncho doing a samba.
