Technically, Odie had a thought, he didn’t speak

I have read almost all Garfield comic strips, and I can indeed confirm that this is the only time in the comic’s history where Odie had a thought. With the exception of another Sunday one where Garfield had a crazy dream, but… it was a dream, so naturally, it doesn’t count.

the reason odie never thinks again is because it is part of his character and it would make him seem less stupid

Odie actually showed intelligently life… though that all changed in the future when he somehow becomes more stupid

it’s weird, not only because this is the only time Odie “speaks” but because the punchline could’ve stuck without the thought and just from pure visual cues…
