I can at least say it is a charitable view of George W. Bush, being flung on the slagheap of history with other villains. The views I’ve heard from within the USA by Americans, even from former Bush supporters, can certainly be much, much more meaner. ;-)
The Austrians I consort with tend be from the lefty, greenie & arty crowd from Osttirol, despite being a stone’s throw from Carinthia, the province that elects far-right nutters, so not the average meanie bunch then and therefore I might be biased. Mind you, I’ve spent quite some time in Vienna too and found them to be very hospitable, less reserved than say, the Germans. I often compare them as “Portuguese with a bit more money”. And they make excellent coffee.
fennec: Fair comment against Ammer, who I do not know very well since he is with the more conservative Wiener Zeitung, if Humphries had said “Ammer” in his criticism of this ‘toon. Yet Humphries chose to say “Austrians” as well as in another by Oliver from the fairly liberal Der Standard. However, I rather like Humphries’s posts and I find his views from within Germany as an American national very interesting and I generally tend to agree with him anyway.
But allow me to declare my bias as regards Austria: my wife is Austrian and my daughter is therefore half-Austrian. I spend a fair bit of time in Austria every year. While it may seem I’m defending Austrians here, I’ll also admit I’m concerned with the rise of the far-right there. I don’t mind criticism of Austria, just that it shouldn’t be generalised.
As for Austrian cartoonists, I’m more familiar with Oliver Schopf who I knew through the Der Standard (my German still stinks but I could read its cartoons! ;-) ) and Pismestrovic through here. If you really want to find awful Austrian cartoonists I suggest the Kronen Zeitung. It is an awful paper and does sometimes feature cartoonists much in keeping of the stereotypical image one has of the far-right in Austria; then again, it’s a tabloid and not very many editorial cartoons anyway. The fact I can read it with much ease shows what sort of language they use! I usually stick to the Kurier while I’m out there.

We CAN find plenty of pics of Reagan, Bush 41, Rumsfeld and Cheney and their oil-loving, sh*t-eating grins, shaking hands with Iranian Ayatollahs, Iraqi dictators, Soviet leaders, etc.

Hmm, I’m no fan of Bush, but he doesn’t quite belong in that company. Also, what he represents is far, far from gone… Unfortunately IMO.
