The compromises made by Baucus and Sen. Finance have not yet picked up a single Rep vote. There is no way to satisfy the GOPers if their goal is to torpedo healthcare reform so they can run on a failed promise in 2010.
The compromises should now be scrapped and a bill with teeth submitted. Baucus has wasted several months with this bucket of slop. The Democrat progressives are growing very impatient.
Oh, but it does satisfy the GOP, if you consider that their goals are to retake control of Congress, and to maintain the status quo so far as medical care (which is vastly different from health care) is concerned.
If Baucus had written a good bill (public option and all), the GOP wouldn’t have been able to explain their opposition, and “no” votes, to their constituencies. And the Dems might have gained even more control of Congress.
Killing healthcare reform for political gain is crass opportunism and a “public be d@mned” outlook. What 35 proposals? Are you talking about amendments to change the bill in committee …. that’s not the same thing as a healthcare reform proposal.
I saw some 30 listed by HR# by a commenter the other day, and went to Thomas.loc.gov and looked ‘em up. A pitiful lot. I took notes somewhere… Hardly worth posting here.
When this mess fails, it will be such a relief to see, that it would take changing a few words in the existing Medicare statute to do the job. Start dropping the eligibility age, and raising the cap on contributions, a bit each year, until everyone is covered, and it’s paid for itself. Remove the “donut-hole” and the restriction on negotiating medication costs.
I know, it’s also a fantasy, until the Money motive is taken out of running for Congress, but we can dream!
