I used to catch them all the time in the drainage ditch in front of our house when I was a boy (over 60 years ago). My mom showed me how to attach a piece of bacon to a string, dip it in the water, and wait for a crawdad to take the bait. I would catch them, play with them for a little while, then throw them back to try and catch it all over again. I was easily entertained.
